When the Skinny Tea Company asked me if I fancied trying their tea’s, I must say, I was intrigued. All we have been hearing for the last year or so is teatox this teatox that. I love herbal tea as it is, so I was keen to get my hand on some of The Skinny Tea Company’s tea to finally put my curiosity to rest and find out what the craic is with all this teatoxing.
Launching in 2013, their back story is an interesting one, as told on their website www.skinnytea.co.uk:
“The Skinny Tea Co™ launched in the summer of 2013 and has grown to become the UK’s biggest Skinny Tea brand. Over half a million cups of our exclusive detox tea have been brewed by customers in over 50 countries around the world.
The Skinny Tea Co™ is completely different to all other skinny teas. We have built up a large and loyal fan base having focused on selling only the highest quality detox teas, rather than producing a cheaper, quick fix solution. All reviews on our website come from genuine customers and are collected by an independent review company who publish these automatically on our behalf – good or bad (95% are 4 or 5 star).
Our skinny teas were first created by Jamie Henderson for his friend Sophie Macdonald.
Jamie is a tea pioneer and the former Personal Chef to the Dutch Ambassador. For years he had heard about a super detox tea, renowned in South East Asia for its ability to speed up your metabolism, burn fat, and and help build lean muscle tone. This super tea was developed by Japanese Scientists in the 80’s. Scientists found that by exposing freshly picked tea leaves to a nitrogen rich environment, rather than an oxygen rich one, they were able to create a super charged detox tea. This super detox tea contains far higher concentrations of healthy fat burning: Antioxidants; Polyphenols; Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG); and Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) than regular green or oolong teas. It is also the basis for many weight loss products in Asia.
Jamie never thought to buy it though; it wasn’t really the sort of tea he bought!
His friend, Sophie, approached Jamie following the birth of her first child. She wanted a green tea that could help her lose the last of her baby weight. She’d read countless articles that talked about the health benefits of drinking green tea and she knew James only bought the very best. Jamie gave Sophie a high grade organic Uji Matcha, a powerful powdered green tea from Japan, along with some some organic GABA Oolong (the super tea) from Taiwan, which he bought for her.
There was one slight problem: Sophie really didn’t like how green tea tasted. She and Jamie began mixing these super teas with other naturally scented teas to improve the flavour. Summer Berry Jamwas their first creation; it remains our most popular!
Delighted with the results Sophie quickly became hooked. After serving it to some of her friends so did they. It was when friends of friends (and friends of friends of friends) began asking if they could buy some of ‘Sophie’s Skinny Tea’ she set up The Skinny Tea Co™ with Jamie.
Since our launch we’ve become slightly wary of being on the ‘skinny tea’ bandwagon. There is an increasing amount of negative publicity surrounding the consumption of skinny or detox teas. The majority of skinny teas come nicely packaged but generally only contain the laxative Senna, which has then been blended with various other herbs and additives of dubious value. (Here’s an article from Cosmopolitan on this.)
Most of these not only taste unpleasant but can only be drunk for short periods of time before causing serious harm. Many also have potentially dangerous and unpleasant side effects. Some brands actually warn you that their teas are toxic – yes, toxic – in higher doses 😦
We’d like to think we were different. All of our teas are 100% laxative free and can be drunk at anytime of day. Most people find our detox teas have zero side effects and are easily incorporated into your daily routine. Our products don’t prevent the birth control pill from working and they taste fantastic too! (Even if we do say so ourselves but, how cool are flavours like Ice Cream, Chocolate, and Peaches and Cream?)
Our detox teas only ever contain our exclusive super Oolong along with a secret blend of hand picked, naturally scented and organic whole leaf oolongs, and a powerful grade of Uji Matcha green tea. We buy our teas directly from farmers and small family owned suppliers plus, we only ever buy the freshest teas available. Like most healthy things, fresh is definitely best! We never bulk up our product by blending in cheaper and potentially dangerous Asian ‘weight loss’ herbs or additives. Additionally all our products are gluten free and suitable for vegetarians.”
So my pack came, and I started on the ‘Teatox’.
The flavours are great, and on the first day I made myself up a Peaches and Cream, a Summer Berry Jam and a mix of Milk Choclate and Ice Cream. You fill the bags with the tea yourself, so you have total control over what you put in and can mix it up if you want to.
After my breakfast, I had the Peaches and Cream one, which tasted lovely. I started with a few bits I wanted to do, then got out in the garden and did my gardening. 4pm rolled around and I realized something. I hadn’t had, or thought about having lunch.
Now I am not advocating skipping meals, it is completely counter-productive on a diet, but the point I am trying to make is usually 3 hours after breakfast I am a ravenous mad woman who would sell my cat to have my lunch. The appetite suppressant properties worked so well, I just for got. I had my Summer Berry tea, and then my dinner.
After dinner, me and Mum both had a concoction I made of half Ice Cream and half Milk Chocolate in one bag.
It was great, because the sweet flavour was perfect after dinner, a bit like having a dessert. I then settled in for the night, anticipating having a bag of crisps as Saturday is my treat night.
A couple of hours passed, and I wasn’t hungry. More time passed, still not hungry. Would you believe it I went to bed without even snacking!
Obviously, two days in, it’s a bit hard to tell the health benefits as have only drunk around 7 tea’s, but the appetite suppressant properties certainly work which I will 100% vouch for.
The taste of all the tea’s is lovely as well, much better than plain boring Green Tea.
One thing I have noticed is having more energy, have got loads done this weekend and technically woke up with a bit of Prosecco head both days but after my breakfast and tea I felt ready to take the day on.
